Vulnerability Overview
In affected versions of WordPress, due to an issue in wp_validate_redirect() and URL sanitization, an arbitrary external link can be crafted leading to unintended/open redirect when clicked. This has been patched in version 5.4.2, along with all the previously affected versions via a minor release (5.3.4, 5.2.7, 5.1.6, 5.0.10, 4.9.15, 4.8.14, 4.7.18, 4.6.19, 4.5.22, 4.4.23, 4.3.24, 4.2.28, 4.1.31, 4.0.31, 3.9.32, 3.8.34, 3.7.34).

CWE-601: URL Redirection to Untrusted Site ('Open Redirect')
WordPress 5.3 3.7 – 5.3.3 · 18 branches carries this weakness at wp_validate_redirect(), and reaching it takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. An open redirect is a page that takes a destination from the request and sends the browser there without checking that the destination belongs to the site.
A link that starts on a trusted domain finishes on an attacker's, which is what makes phishing and consent-screen abuse credible to the person clicking it. For WordPress 5.3 the fix is 3.7.34: builds 3.7 – 5.3.3 · 18 branches are affected, anything from 3.7.34 onward is not.

How does WordSec protect against this?
The attempt arrives as an ordinary request to WordPress 5.3: WordSec's web application firewall inspects request payloads before WordPress loads them. None of that substitutes for the fix: updating to 3.7.34 is the step that ends it.
