Vulnerability Overview
The Xagio SEO – AI Powered SEO plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the ‘HTTP_REFERER’ parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.1.0.16 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The vulnerability was partially patched in version 7.1.0.0.
Technical Analysis

Xagio SEO & AEO <= 7.1.0.16 carries this weakness at HTTP_REFERER, and reaching it takes no account at all. Cross-site scripting happens when input from a request is written into a page without being escaped for the context it lands in, so the browser parses attacker-supplied text as markup or script.
Injected script runs with the privileges of whoever views the affected page, which is how these flaws turn into administrator session theft, silent account creation or persistent backdoors in page content. For Xagio SEO & AEO the fix is 7.1.0.17: builds <= 7.1.0.16 are affected, anything from 7.1.0.17 onward is not.
Remediation
Update to version 7.1.0.17, or a newer patched version

None of that substitutes for the fix: Xagio SEO & AEO 7.1.0.17 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
