At a glance

CVE-2026-101161 is a medium-severity Uncontrolled Resource Consumption vulnerability in the WP Ultimate Review WordPress plugin, affecting versions <= 2.4.3. It carries a CVSS score of 5.3 (reachable over the network; low attack complexity). Exploitation requires no authentication. The issue is fixed in version 2.4.4; sites on affected versions should update now. Disclosed October 2026, reported by Alban Roche.

Vulnerability Overview

The Ultimate Review plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Denial of Service in all versions up to, and including, 2.4.3. This is due to missing isset() guard on the review_location key of the display settings option, which is an empty string when never saved, causing a fatal PHP error when accessed as an array in the shortcode and content-filter handlers. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to cause a persistent denial of service on any reviewed page by submitting a review when the plugin's display settings have never been saved, triggering a fatal PHP error on every subsequent visit to that page. The WP Ultimate Review display settings must have never been saved (fresh install with no settings configuration), leaving the xs_review_display option unset.

Technical Analysis

The vector marks this flaw as remotely reachable over the network, with low attack complexity — no special timing or configuration is needed, and no privileges on the target site, and no interaction from a victim user.

CWE-400: Uncontrolled Resource Consumption

WP Ultimate Review <= 2.4.3 carries this weakness at isset(), and reaching it takes no account at all. Uncontrolled resource consumption means a request can make the server do an amount of work it never bounds, because the size or repetition of the job is taken from the request rather than capped by the code.

A single caller can hold PHP workers, database connections or disk open long enough to slow the site for everyone, without needing any account or any other flaw. For WP Ultimate Review the fix is 2.4.4: builds <= 2.4.3 are affected, anything from 2.4.4 onward is not.

Remediation

Update to version 2.4.4, or a newer patched version

How does WordSec protect against this?

Requests carrying this pattern arrive without a session, so nothing upstream of the firewall gets a chance to reject them: WordSec's web application firewall inspects request payloads before WordPress loads them. None of that substitutes for the fix: WP Ultimate Review 2.4.4 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
