Vulnerability Overview

The Social Media Share Buttons & Social Sharing Icons plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Arbitrary Options Deletion in versions up to, and including, 1.5.1. This is due to missing capability checks on the sfsi_DeleteSkin() function that deletes options based on a user supplied parameter. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers with subscriber level and above permissions to delete arbitrary site options which can cause a loss of data and functionality on an affected WordPress site.

Social Media Share Buttons & Social Sharing Icons <= 1.5.1 carries this weakness at sfsi_DeleteSkin(), and reaching it takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. A missing authorization check means a function is reachable by anyone who can reach the endpoint, because the code never asks whether the caller is allowed to perform the action.

Any user who can reach the endpoint gets to run an action reserved for higher-privileged roles, from reading protected data to changing settings or content. For Social Media Share Buttons & Social Sharing Icons the fix is 1.5.2: builds <= 1.5.1 are affected, anything from 1.5.2 onward is not.

Update to version 1.5.2, or a newer patched version
