Vulnerability Overview

The Tutor LMS Pro plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized access of data, modification of data, loss of data due to a missing capability check on the 'authenticate' function in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.0. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level permissions and above, to gain control of an existing administrator account.

Tutor LMS Pro <= 2.7.0 carries this weakness at authenticate, and reaching it takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. SQL injection happens when request data is concatenated into a query instead of being bound as a parameter, letting an attacker change the structure of the statement rather than just its values.

A working injection can read any table the database user can see, which on a WordPress install means user records, password hashes and session or API secrets stored in options. For Tutor LMS Pro the fix is 2.7.1: builds <= 2.7.0 are affected, anything from 2.7.1 onward is not.

Update to version 2.7.1, or a newer patched version
