Vulnerability Overview

The Theme My Login plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Privilege Escalation in versions 7.0 through 7.1.15. This is due to insufficient restriction on the capabilities a user may grant themselves. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to elevate their privileges beyond those intended for their role.

It converts a low-privileged account into an administrative one, which makes every other restriction on the site irrelevant. For Theme My Login the fix is 7.2.0: builds 7.0 – 7.1.15 are affected, anything from 7.2.0 onward is not.

Because it turns on account access, WordSec's login security is the relevant layer: role-based two-factor, captcha and brute-force limits raise the cost of getting the account this needs. None of that substitutes for the fix: Theme My Login 7.2.0 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
