Vulnerability Overview

The The Welcomizer plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in all versions up to and including 2.8.1. This is due to missing authorization checks on the twiz_ajax_callback AJAX action's 'savesection' handler combined with the use of eval() to execute user-supplied 'custom logic' code on the frontend. The AJAX handler at twiz-ajax.php verifies a nonce but performs no current_user_can() capability check for the ACTION_SAVE_SECTION case. Furthermore, the nonce is exposed to any authenticated user through the directly-accessible twiz-ajax.js.php file which loads WordPress and outputs the nonce. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary PHP code via the twiz_custom_logic POST parameter when saving a section with output choice 'twiz_logic_output'.

The Welcomizer <= 2.8.1 carries this weakness at savesection, and reaching it takes an account at Subscriber level or above. Code injection means input from a request reaches a language construct that evaluates code, so the attacker's text is executed rather than treated as data.

The injected code runs with the web server's privileges, giving the attacker the same access to the database and filesystem as WordPress itself. For The Welcomizer the fix is 999.0: builds <= 2.8.1 are affected, anything from 999.0 onward is not.

Update to version 999.0, or a newer patched version

How does WordSec protect against this?

An attacker needs Subscriber access first, so the firewall sees the attempt as traffic from a logged-in account: WordSec's web application firewall inspects request payloads before WordPress loads them. Classes like this one can leave something behind, so the staged malware scanner is the second half: it looks for dropped files and modified code rather than for the request that created them. None of that substitutes for the fix: The Welcomizer 999.0 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
