Vulnerability Overview

The LatePoint – Calendar Booking Plugin for Appointments and Events plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the JSON Import in all versions up to, and including, 5.2.7 due to insufficient validation on the user-supplied JSON data. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Administrator-level access and above, to execute arbitrary SQL queries on the database that can be used to extract information via time-based techniques, drop tables, or modify data.

Reaching this weakness in Appointment Booking Plugin <= 5.2.7 takes an account at Administrator level or above. SQL injection happens when request data is concatenated into a query instead of being bound as a parameter, letting an attacker change the structure of the statement rather than just its values.

A working injection can read any table the database user can see, which on a WordPress install means user records, password hashes and session or API secrets stored in options. For Appointment Booking Plugin the fix is 5.2.8: builds <= 5.2.7 are affected, anything from 5.2.8 onward is not.

Update to version 5.2.8, or a newer patched version

How does WordSec protect against this?

An attacker needs Administrator access first, so the firewall sees the attempt as traffic from a logged-in account: WordSec's web application firewall inspects request payloads before WordPress loads them. None of that substitutes for the fix: Appointment Booking Plugin 5.2.8 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
