At a glance

This record tracks a high-severity Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') vulnerability in the Copy or Move Comments WordPress plugin, affecting versions < 1.0.1. It carries a CVSS score of 8.8 (reachable over the network; low attack complexity; high confidentiality, integrity, availability impact). The issue is fixed in version 1.0.1; sites on affected versions should update now. Disclosed June 2015, reported by Kenneth Jepsen.

Vulnerability Overview

The Copy or Move Comments plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via several parameters in versions up to, and including, 1.0.0 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that execute if they can successfully trick a user into performing an action such as clicking on a link. The plugin is also vulnerable to time-based blind SQL Injection via the ‘source_post’ and ‘target_post’ parameters due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

Technical Analysis

The vector marks this flaw as remotely reachable over the network, with low attack complexity — no special timing or configuration is needed, and no interaction from a victim user. A successful exploit has high impact on confidentiality, integrity, availability — full site compromise territory.

CWE-79: Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')

Copy or Move Comments < 1.0.1 carries this weakness at source_post, and reaching it takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. Cross-site scripting happens when input from a request is written into a page without being escaped for the context it lands in, so the browser parses attacker-supplied text as markup or script.

Injected script runs with the privileges of whoever views the affected page, which is how these flaws turn into administrator session theft, silent account creation or persistent backdoors in page content. For Copy or Move Comments the fix is 1.0.1: builds < 1.0.1 are affected, anything from 1.0.1 onward is not.

Remediation

Update to version 1.0.1, or a newer patched version

How does WordSec protect against this?

The attempt arrives as an ordinary request to Copy or Move Comments: WordSec's web application firewall inspects request payloads before WordPress loads them. None of that substitutes for the fix: Copy or Move Comments 1.0.1 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
