Vulnerability Overview

The Category Posts Widget plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the excerpt_more_text field in all versions up to, and including, 4.9.16 (and versions up to 4.9.13 for PRO) due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with administrator-level permissions and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This only affects multi-site installations and installations where unfiltered_html has been disabled.

Technical Analysis

REMEDIATION: Update to version 4.9.17, or a newer patched version --- IDENTIFIER: CWE-79 (Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting')) The product does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes user-controllable input before it is placed in output that is used as a web page that is served to other users.
