Vulnerability Overview

The Announcement & Notification Banner – Bulletin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Cross-Site Request Forgery due to a missing nonce validation on the 'bulletinwp_update_bulletin_status', 'bulletinwp_update_bulletin', 'bulletinwp_update_settings', 'bulletinwp_update_status', 'bulletinwp_export_bulletins', and 'bulletinwp_import_bulletins' functions in versions up to, and including, 3.7.0. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to modify the plugin's settings, modify bulletins, create new bulletins, and more, via a forged request granted they can trick a site's user into performing an action such as clicking on a link.

Announcement & Notification Banner <= 3.7.0 carries this weakness at bulletinwp_update_bulletin_status, and reaching it takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. Cross-site request forgery abuses the fact that browsers attach a victim's cookies to any request, so a state-changing action that only checks who you are, not whether you meant to act, can be triggered from another site.

An attacker who gets a logged-in user to load a crafted page can perform that action as them, with the impact scaling to whatever the victim's role is allowed to do. For Announcement & Notification Banner the fix is 3.7.1: builds <= 3.7.0 are affected, anything from 3.7.1 onward is not.

Remediation

Update to version 3.7.1, or a newer patched version
