Vulnerability Overview

The Advanced Responsive Video Embedder for Rumble, Odysee, YouTube, Vimeo, Kick … plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Authentication Bypass via a Hardcoded Backdoor in versions 10.8.7 and 10.8.8. The vulnerability exists because the `_arve_uc_init()` function — registered on WordPress's `init` hook at priority 1 so that it runs before any authentication checks on every request — reads an attacker-supplied token from the `_wplogin` (or `_wpm`) parameter and compares it against a hardcoded SHA-256 hash embedded directly in the plugin source, with no nonce verification, no capability check, and no password validation anywhere in the flow. Because this static hash constitutes a set of universal credentials that are publicly accessible in the plugin's source code, unauthenticated attackers can supply the known token to be authenticated as an arbitrarily selected existing administrator account, gaining full administrative control over the affected WordPress site. This was likely introduced by an attacker who gained commit access to the developers account.

Technical Analysis

The vector marks this flaw as remotely reachable over the network, with low attack complexity — no special timing or configuration is needed, and no privileges on the target site, and no interaction from a victim user. A successful exploit has high impact on confidentiality, integrity, availability — full site compromise territory.

CWE-506: Embedded Malicious Code

Advanced Responsive Video Embedder for Rumble, Odysee, YouTube, Vimeo, Kick … 10.8.7 – 10.8.8 · 2 branches carries this weakness at _arve_uc_init(), and reaching it takes no account at all. Embedded malicious code means functionality was deliberately placed in the software to act against the site owner's interest, rather than being an accidental defect.

Removing the software is not enough on its own — anything it created or modified while active has to be audited too. For Advanced Responsive Video Embedder for Rumble, Odysee, YouTube, Vimeo, Kick … the fix is 10.9.0: builds 10.8.7 – 10.8.8 · 2 branches are affected, anything from 10.9.0 onward is not.

Remediation

Update to version 10.9.0, or a newer patched version

How does WordSec protect against this?

This one needs no account at all, which puts it outside what login hardening can reach; WordSec's login security narrows the account-level paths around it, and the firewall is what inspects the request itself. Classes like this one can leave something behind, so the staged malware scanner is the second half: it looks for dropped files and modified code rather than for the request that created them. None of that substitutes for the fix: Advanced Responsive Video Embedder for Rumble, Odysee, YouTube, Vimeo, Kick … 10.9.0 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
