At a glance
CVE-2022-45368 is a high-severity Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor vulnerability in the 1003 Mortgage Application WordPress plugin, affecting versions <= 1.75. It carries a CVSS score of 7.1 (reachable over the network; low attack complexity; high confidentiality impact). Exploitation requires an authenticated account at Subscriber level or above. The issue is fixed in version 1.80; sites on affected versions should update now. Disclosed February 2023, reported by Rodrigo Escobar (ipax).
Vulnerability Overview
The 1003 Mortgage Application plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to arbitrary file download in versions up to, and including, 1.75 due to incorrect controls on the mortgate_application_download_file_callback() function. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access or higher to download arbitrary files on the affected site's server, including database configuration files.
Technical Analysis
The vector marks this flaw as remotely reachable over the network, with low attack complexity — no special timing or configuration is needed, and no interaction from a victim user. A successful exploit has high impact on confidentiality.
CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor
1003 Mortgage Application <= 1.75 carries this weakness at mortgate_application_download_file_callback(), and reaching it takes an account at Subscriber level or above. Sensitive information exposure means data the application intended to keep internal is returned to a caller who should not be able to see it.
The disclosed data — credentials, tokens, customer records or internal paths — is usually worth more as material for a follow-up attack than as an end in itself. For 1003 Mortgage Application the fix is 1.80: builds <= 1.75 are affected, anything from 1.80 onward is not.
Remediation
Update to version 1.80, or a newer patched version
How does WordSec protect against this?
The fix is the thing that ends this: 1003 Mortgage Application 1.80 closes this, and updating the plugin is the step that ends it.
