CWE-863: Incorrect Authorization
Reaching this weakness in WordPress 4.7 3.7 – 4.7.2 · 12 branches takes a caller who can reach the endpoint. Incorrect authorization means a permission check exists but evaluates the wrong thing, so it passes for callers it was meant to stop.
The action runs for users the code intended to exclude, with the same effect as having no check at all. For WordPress 4.7 the fix is 3.7.19: builds 3.7 – 4.7.2 · 12 branches are affected, anything from 3.7.19 onward is not.
Remediation
Update to one of the following versions, or a newer patched version: 3.7.19, 3.8.19, 3.9.17, 4.0.16, 4.1.16, 4.2.13, 4.3.9, 4.4.8, 4.5.7, 4.6.4, 4.7.3
How does WordSec protect against this?
Because it turns on account access, WordSec's login security is the relevant layer: role-based two-factor, captcha and brute-force limits raise the cost of getting the account this needs. None of that substitutes for the fix: updating to 3.7.19 is the step that ends it.
